Many times when I first started listening to the Dead, I'd get a batch of tapes at a time from a mail trade and listen to them through from start to finish. There was often a show or too that caught me at the end of the day dozing off and the music became intertwined with my subconscious. I'd think how amazing it was what I had heard and couldn't wait to 'wake-up' and re-listen the set that I was half-awake for to validate that it was indeed what I had remembered. Often enough, it was. And on the other hand, there weren't that many listening sessions in altered states of consciousness that slipped under the radar. If you didn't enjoy them in any state, they were unlikely to inspire fully awake with a clear head. Weird. I love that show too.
